Data Journalism

Finding Wally is a fun game, but challenging and frustrating at times too. I find that this classic game is the perfect metaphor for our modern-day information overload.

Journalist play a crucial role in this age of information. Unlike before information now is surpassing our ability to process it all. As a consequence the Internet contains a vast amount of raw information waiting to be found, processed, cleaned and made readable to the public.

Data journalism is a practice of presenting information in a way that fosters efficient and effective understanding of it.

“In a way, we´re all visual now. Every day, every hour, may be every minute, we´re seeing and absorbing information via the web. We´re steeped in it. May be even lost in it. So perhaps what we need are well-designed, colourful and, hopefully, useful charts to help us navigate.”

David McCandless

To conclude with I would recommend you to have a look at“How big data is changing lives”. This is a BBC 5 min video on the topic, it shows some very inspiring examples that happened because of the right data. Enjoy!Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 03.55.59
